A new contractor will be operating, managing and maintaining the city of Santa Clarita's 99-bus fleet beginning this week.

MV Transportation, Inc. is replacing Violia Transportation to operate the city's commuter, fixed-route, dial-a-ride and ASI transit services.

"The award of MV Transportation is a great step in meeting the growing demand for the city of Santa Clarita Transit," City Transit Manager Jeff O'Keefe said in a statement. "MV Transportation is committed to providing superior transportation service to the city's customers and accommodating riders needs by allowing passengers to travel with ease to their destination."

MV Transportation is the largest privately owned transportation contracting firm in the United States. The company has a three-year, $51.7 million contract with the city, with seven one-year renewal options.

"This is a very exciting project for MV," said Kevin Klika, president of MV's West Coast operations. "The city is moving forward with several innovative and technological advances to their transit services, and MV's unique expertise in this area will certainly complement those efforts."

The city held the contract with Veolia for 12 years. Over the past 15 years, the city's transit ridership has grown from 60,000 to 3.7 million.
