Stop those speeders

As I take my two young children to school each and every day, one thing stands out - careless drivers.
Santa Clarita Elementary School and the adjacent junior high school are two of the few unfortunate schools in our city that sit at a very busy intersection. It never ceases to amaze me how many people speed through that school zone. For each person obeying the reduced speed, there are at least five who are easily going twice that. At least a quarter of them are doing so while using a handheld cellular device.

This issue upsets most, if not all, of the parents of children who attend this wonderful school. Letters have been sent to the Sheriff's Department, the city manager's office and the school board. Better signs have been installed (though often the lighted one by the park doesn't even work), crosswalks were repainted and still the speeding continues.

What I am wondering is why won't the Sheriff's Department simply post an deputy in our school zone during morning dropoff and afternoon pickup? It seems to me that not only would our children be safer walking to and from school, but it could easily generate lots of cash for the city.
