CrossFit SCV will be holding a “Hero Workout” to benefit Arnaldo “Arnie” Quinones, a Los Angeles County firefighter who died fighting last year’s Station Fire.

Quinones is the first firefighter to be given a Hero Workout by CrossFit; an honor usually given to armed services and law enforcement members who died in the line of duty.

A group of Navy Seals started CrossFit as a way to share workouts and honor fallen armed forces members, law
enforcement officers and now firefighters. The organization has local chapters, known as affiliates, that participate in workouts and events.

Participants at Arnie’s Hero Workout will do a workout that was a favorite of Quinones. The workout will benefit his daughter Sophia, who was born three weeks after his death.  CrossFit hopes to make the workout an annual event and the proceeds will be given to Quinones’ daughter to help with her college education.

“We’re going to look out for (Quinones’ family),” says firefighter Ryan Golfne.

Golfne, who was a friend of Quinones, says he was greatly affected by Quinones’ death.

“It felt like I lost my brother,” Golfne says. “It will affect me for the rest of my life.”

Those wishing to attend the workout can RSVP by emailing

“If you knew (Arnie) for 10 days, he made you feel like you’ve known him for 20 years,” Golfne says.

“People all the way from Sacramento have RSVP’d for Arnie’s event.”

The event will be held on Aug. 28, starting at 9:00 a.m. The workout will be held at CrossFit Santa Clarita, 26330 Diamond Place, Unit 150.
