A little reverence for our heritage oaks, please

Is it just me, or does something seem just a little out of kilter in Santa Clarita?

In the July 21 edition of The Signal, there was the story about a 100-year-old fig tree in the Little Tokyo area of downtown Los angles, which is now one of the city's historic-cultural monuments.

And then in the same edition, there was a story about the planned housing development in Stevenson Ranch for 93 single-family lots and 93 condos which will dig up 162 oak trees, 13 of which are "heritage oaks," which were growing when the Declaration of Independence was signed (200-plus years ago).

It seems sad that we cannot have the same reverence for our heritage oak trees that Little Tokyo has for its fig tree.
