The first playoff game in West Ranch girls basketball history ended Saturday in defeat.

The Wildcats lost 71-36 to fifth-seeded Foothill High in Santa Ana in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division I-A playoffs.

Erin Ruiz led West Ranch with nine points, hitting a pair of 3-pointers.

Seniors Anjelica Ostrea and Paige Herndon each scored eight points.

The bigger Knights, led by junior Christina Marinacci who averages 22 points and 11.5 rebounds per contest, were too much for the height-challenged Wildcats and jumped on them quickly.

By halftime, Foothill led 44-15.

Marinacci led Foothill with 18 points.

West Ranch squeaked into the postseason as an at-large team from the Foothill League, tying Golden Valley for fifth place in league with a three-overtime victory Feb. 8.

It gave the Wildcats their 12th victory, which is a minimum requirement to make the postseason.

But there will be no more wins this season as West Ranch finishes 12-15 overall.

The Sea View League champions came into the game ranked 24th in the state by Calpreps.com and are now 22-5.
