Ice cream set for hospital hearing

Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital officials are hoping that a few scoops of ice cream will leave area residents with a good taste in their mouths as the public hearing date for the hospital’s controversial expansion plans nears.

The hospital is hosting an ice cream social 2-4 p.m. Aug. 9, exactly a month before the plans are scheduled to return to the council.

“We’re really starting to round the bend here, we hope, and we really wanted to give them an opportunity to ask more questions and give more input if they want,” hospital spokeswoman Andie Bogdan said. “We figure if people are going to bother coming out here on a hot August Saturday, we should give them a little something to cool off their afternoon.”

The hospital’s sometimes controversial 15-year, $300 million master plan would add 327,000 square-feet to the existing 340,000-square-foot hospital campus. The plan calls for a 125,000-square-foot inpatient building and three new medical office buildings. Two office buildings would be 60,000 square feet and one would be 80,000 square feet.

Invitations for the ice cream social were sent to about 16,000, but Bogdan said the event is open to the public. It will be held in front of the pavilion near the hospital’s main entrance.
