Friendly Valley service
Who: The Friendly Valley Community Church (United Methodist)
What: Pastor Stan Fix will present from the Peoples Choice Sermon Series,  “Freely, Freely,” based on Matthew 9:35-10:8 and Romans 5:1-8. Special music by Chan Shaw on flute. Fellowship and coffee will follow the service. All are welcome.

Grief support
Who: The Friendly Valley Community Church (United Methodist)
What: “Grief: A Journey of Healing,” For those who grieve, or who want to be prepared to help themselves or others. Dr. Stan Fix will lead a two-session series on healthy, practical ways of working through loss. Course includes video. No charge.
When: Wednesdays, Aug. 18 and 25, 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Heart of Christianity study
Who: St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church summer discussion group
What: Study, “The Heart of Christianity: Discovering a Life of Faith,” by Christian scholar Marcus Borg, a professor of religion and culture at Oregon State University. Borg’s book explains how the Christian faith can be “a way of the heart,” “an opening of the heart,” and “a heart for justice.” His book, and the discussion, will touch on what Jesus of Nazareth’s earthly ministry was really about. The informal discussion group is open to all seekers of a more meaningful Christian life in the Santa Clarita Valley community. Copies of the study book will be available at the meeting. No reservation is necessary.

Helping AIDS patients
Who: St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church
What: Members of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church and the Lutheran Church of Hope will prepare and distribute bag lunches for AIDS patients at The Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center. The program is run by donations and is free to those who wish to volunteer.
When: 9:45 a.m. on the third Thursday of every month.

Health fair
Who: Santa Clarita United Methodist Church along with Parish Nurse Partnership
What: Health fair with free screenings for a variety of health issues including cholesterol, blood sugar, high blood pressure, hearing loss and body mass index. Free information on smoking, cessation, acupuncture and the bone marrow national registry.
