COC offers free computer classes

Courses run all day on Saturdays

College of the Canyons will offer a series of free one-day computer classes this fall, each designed for the typical adult home computer user.

Offered through the college’s Continuing Education department, the new noncredit courses will teach students a variety of highly useful computer skills related to the course topic, with no previous knowledge of the subject required.

The Saturday classes will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Sept. 6 through Nov. 15 in room 105 in Towsley Hall on the COC Valencia Campus. Five classes will be offered, with each class offered on two dates.

The class, Home Computer Software, will show home computer users how to open the case, identify vital components, add expansion cards and become familiar with the operation of the computer. Students will also learn how to assemble a home computer from parts. This class will be offered Sept. 6 and Oct. 10.

Home Computer Networks will provide students with an opportunity to become familiar with various computer networking procedures, focusing on how to set up a secure network in the home. This class will be offered Sept. 20 and Oct. 25.

Home Computer Operating Systems will familiarize students will the structure, functionality and operation of the computer’s operating system, focusing on how to configure an operating system to meet the user’s specific needs. This class will be offered Sept. 13 and Oct. 18.

Home Computer Security will provide students with the knowledge needed to implement security software, as well as how to avoid viruses and other threats to a home computer. This class will be offered Sept. 27 and Nov. 1.

Home Computer Maintenance will help students become familiar with highly-recommended maintenance procedures. This class will be offered Oct. 4 and Nov. 15.
