Party or country?

What has happened to our government? If I remember correctly, we are supposed to be for and by the people, not for the person who can raise the most money and make empty promises.

Ever since Mr. Bush improperly took office after the 2000 election, it has been downhill. Inflation is at its worst in decades, joblessness is at one of the highest rates in my lifetime, our monetary surplus has become a giant debt that will take well past my lifetime to pay off, and of course we are in a war that started with lies.

We are pouring trillions of our hard-earned dollars into rebuilding a country in the Middle East, and for what? So the chiefs of big corporations can line their own pockets?

Why are we rebuilding a country that 20 or so years from now will probably be our enemy again? Let's bring the troops home and put that same money into rebuilding our own infrastructure and rebuilding the damage done from hurricane Katrina and the devastating floods and fires of recent times.

Some of the Republican Party members are calling Americans whiners and complainers. Well, come down off of your ivory towers and live like the rest of us, working hard and doing our best to make ends meet.

How many Americans take weeks at a time for Fourth of July break, or take time off winter session? How many Americans have the kind of health care insurance that our elected officials have?

Now as much as I would like to lay this whole thing on Mr. Bush, I can't. It time for our two houses to put aside party politics and to do what is right for the country, not what they think is right for the party.

Mr. Bush blames Congress for the gas crisis. Well, how about sharing the blame! It is time for everyone to get off their proverbial butts and take action.

Pass legislation to help the auto makers develop alternative fuel cars. The technology is here. They just need some incentives from our lawmakers.

I know free trade sounds great with other countries, but it only works on a level playing field, and we will not be on a level field until our own government either boycotts countries that are subsidizing their own industries or we start helping ours.

It is time for all of us to start looking inward to see what is more important: party politics or our country!
