Odd news
Robber gets mocha’d
CRESCENT CITY (AP) — An attempted burglary at a California supply store was thwarted when the manager threw hot coffee in the face of a masked intruder.

Chris Hegnes, manager of the Englund Marine and Industrial Supply, was going into work early Monday morning when he encountered a man in a mask charging at him with a hammer.

Hegnes says he hurled his hot mocha at the man’s face and ran for it.

The man came after him for a few steps, then ran to a vehicle parked behind the store.

Hegnes says the man apparently had been trying to break into a safe using the store’s hardware tools. The man didn’t get away with much, but damaged some tools.

The sheriff’s office is investigating.

Police nab Pa. woman alleged as clown bank robber

BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania (AP) — Police in northeastern Pennsylvania have arrested a woman they say robbed a bank in a clown costume.

Bethlehem police said the woman was captured about five minutes after the bank robbery late Friday morning. Her name has not been released.

Police said the suspect told bank employees she had a bomb, and fled with an unknown amount of cash.

Arriving officers say they chased her to a nearby park and nabbed her changing out of the clown suit in her car.

A bomb squad robot checked out items found in the car, including the clown suit and a multicolored wig. No explosives were found.

No one in the bank was injured.

Spontaneous debris combustion starts Seattle fire

SEATTLE (AP) — Spontaneous combustion can start fires in oily rags or piles of sawdust and also “organic debris” in a deserted Seattle apartment.

Fire Department spokeswoman Dana Vander Houwen says a Friday morning fire in a vacant three-story apartment building in the Ballard neighborhood started in organic material left in a kitchen under a stack of newspapers. Internal oxidation generated enough heat to ignite.

Vander Housen says it’s hard to say exactly what the debris was, except it was left behind and hadn’t been cleaned out.

No one was injured in the fire that caused an estimated $40,000 damage.

Iowa City couple to wed at jr. high 50 years later
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa City couple is getting married at South East Junior High nearly 50 years after they met there as seventh graders.

Karen Wilcox and Mike Wilson were brought together in 1962 by an alphabetized homeroom seating arrangement.

They dated in eighth grade, but broke up by high school.

They stayed in touch on and off as each went on to two unsuccessful marriages.

The two started dating again in January after Wilson moved back to Iowa City from Florida, where he’d lived after retiring as a surgeon.

They’ll get married in the same room where they shared their first dance.

Principal Deb Wretman loved the idea. She says most people leave junior high and never want to look back.
