Half of the Hart squad pitched in the Indians loss to Chatsworth in the semifinals of the summer Valley Invitational Baseball League playoffs on Tuesday.

Well not quite, but six pitchers did account for the Chancellors 23-4 rout.

Freshman-to-be Garrett Gooding started on the mound for the Indians and only lasted two innings. Hart gave up 10 runs in the second along with three errors.

"Everything broke down," said Indians head coach Jim Ozella. "It was a bad day at Bedrock."

Ozella attributed defensive miscues and inconsistencies at the mound to the loss.

"When you put all those together, that's how you get hammered," Ozella added.

The Indians didn't have a good day at the plate either. The Chatsworth pitching staff struck out 12 Indians batters.

Hart's only highlight of the day came from senior-to-be Devin Rodriguez whose solo home run in the sixth led off the Indians offense.

C.J. Millar and Daniel Dietz strung together a couple of hits to add to the scoreboard but Chatsworth's lead proved insurmountable.

The Indians were the only Foothill League team to advance to the semifinals. Chatsworth defeated Valencia in the quarterfinals prior to its meeting with Hart.

Despite the loss, Ozella said the team had a very productive summer.

"We tried to answer some questions this summer and we still have a lot of questions to answer like how do we compete against quality teams," he said.

With the 2009 baseball season still a long ways away, Ozella's squad has plenty of time to get back to championship status.

And according to Ozella, there is still a lot work to be done to get there.

"We have to do well on defense, pitching and limit our mistakes," he said.
