After lengthy delay, local All-Stars rout Sinaloa, Mexico

Inclement weather kept the William S. Hart PONY League 10U All-Stars from taking the field for two and a half hours on Friday.

But nothing could keep them from the semifinals of the 2010 Mustang World Series.

Hart Mustang exploded on offense and got a solid start from pitcher Cole Roederer to earn a 16-0 win over Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico in Irving, Texas.

The win gave Hart Mustang the No. 1 seed from its four-team pool play group, and the squad will play in the semifinals today at 10 a.m. Central time.

The opponent was not known at press time as games were still going on, but Hart Mustang head coach Jerry Miller believed that his team would be facing a team from Chesterfield, Va.

After losing the first game of the World Series. Hart Mustang has responded with what Miller called the two most impressive efforts of the season.

“The kids just got through adversity,” Miller said. “After dropping that first game and playing as poorly as we did, they just showed me they could fight through it.”

Roederer pitched three perfect innings and struck out four batters before being taken out. Miller made the decision because rules state that a pitcher who pitches more than three innings must wait 40 hours after the game before pitching again.

Hart Mustang had quite a wait just to play the game. A lightning storm at around 6:15 p.m. sent the teams to their vans for a half an hour, according to Miller.

When the teams took the field again, rain began to pour and delayed the start for another hour and a half.

Miller said the wait proved to be beneficial for his team.

“It was unleashing a rabid dog,” he said. “You’ve got 15 kids sitting in a 12-kid passenger van for two and a half hours, and it seemed like every time we let them out on the field they were all antsy to play.”

Hart Mustang scored five runs in the first inning and never looked back. Noah Cardenas went 2-for-4 with five RBIs, while Cody Jefferis went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Roederer wound up 3-for-3 and drove in a run, while Caden Miller was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Ryan Carolan collected two hits, and Timmy Josten, Nico Valdez, Nick Rogers, Al Aguero and Brady Anderson each had one. Pitcher Dominic Eberle struck out three batters to close the game.

Hart Mustang lost the first game of the World Series 5-4 to Joliet, Ill. on Wednesday, but rebounded to defeat Keller, Texas 5-0 on Thursday.

If Hart Mustang wins the morning game, it will play again at 6:30 p.m. Central time in the championship game.
But the semifinals come first.

“They look like a good ball club,” Miller said of the team from Virginia. “In the little time I’ve gotten to see them, they’re fundamentally sound.”
