Summer baseball is in full effect and one local face is making his presence known.

Saugus graduate and Pepperdine University incoming freshman Tyler Brubaker had a number of standout performances with his Playa Vista Orioles team.

The Connie Mack 18-under baseball team, comprised of top players from the Antelope Valley, Santa Clarita, San Fernando Valley. Conejo Valley and Oxnard, finished atop the Southern California Connie Mack league with a record of 13-3.

Brubaker led the Orioles team to a victory in the State Northern Championships with a walk-off home run in the 10th inning against the California Rockies from the Long Beach Blair League on July 20.

The win advanced the squad to the Western Regional Championship game on Sunday however, Brubaker and his team fell 5-3 to Arizona Finest.

Hit streak halted

Hart graduate Chris Valaika's 18-game hitting steak was snapped on Thursday. Since then Valaika's has had a hit in three of his last four games.

Valaika is currently hitting .313 for the Cincinnati Reds Double A affiliate, the Chattanooga Lookouts, and .329 overall in 2008.

Football honors
Hart graduate and University of Redlands defensive tackle Brock Arndt was named to the D3football.com Preseason All-American Second Team.

During the 2007 season, Arndt assisted the Bulldogs win their 28th Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship.

The squad advanced to the NCAA playoffs for the fifth time in Bulldogs history. Ardnt ranked No. 5 on the team in tackles with 28, recovered two fumbles for 10 yards. Ardnt also earned First Team All-Conference honors.

Making some noise
Hart graduate and Fresno State student Angela Olinger is headed to the Olympics.

She won't be sweating it out with the other Olympic athletes, she will in fact be participating in the 2,008-member ensemble of young people from around the world in China.

The Olympic Orchestra's performance in Tiananmen Square on Aug. 3 is among the pre-Opening Ceremonies activities.

Olinger will be playing the clarinet in the ensemble.
