The eternal LBD

A few weeks ago I made plans for a girls night out with some friends.

It's a rarity for me to have a night out with my girls. Nowadays, our lives are so consumed with careers, relationships and family that it's almost impossible to schedule a time for everyone to meet up.

We decided we'd go out for a sushi dinner in the valley, Encino to be exact.

I knew this would be the perfect opportunity for me to get dolled up and out of my usual work attire.

For any night out with the girls, a little black dress, or LBD as it's often called, is the appropriate regalia for our outing.

It got me thinking about this lasting wardrobe staple that has transcended season after season.

Any die-hard fashionista is familiar with Audrey Hepburn and her iconic black Givenchy dress that she donned in "Breakfast at Tiffany's."

Hepburn's appearance made this chic and sophisticated dress famous.

Along with Hepburn, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis made the simple black dress elegant. Kennedy-Onassis was by far the most stylish first lady to ever grace the White House. She was the epitome of class and style.

Kennedy-Onassis savored such designers as Dior, Givenchy and Chanel. Chanel, the fashion house known for its signature black, has always assembled some of the most beautiful works of fashion art.

So many have since tried to emulate these women and their style.

I, too live vicariously through my LBD in their memory.

Now a new wave of budding fashion icons adorn the cover of magazines and walk red carpets.

Yet we may never come close to achieving the level of style and grace these two women had.

Oh if only I could walk a mile in their pumps.

At least they did leave one thing behind.

The most simple and accessible wardrobe staple which has become synonymous for girls' night out.

The Eternal LBD.
