Don’t give him a chance

In July 4’s issue, Ron Smith wrote a letter castigating Congressman Howard “Buck” McKeon, R-Santa Clarita, for his support of efforts to require a balanced budget (“Dear Congressman”).

Though he does raise some valid points, one thing he wrote reveals his own bias: “Republican spending has driven this country to the brink of disaster, and now you want to blame the person elected to clean it up.”

It took Bush almost eight years to run the deficit up to $8 trillion. It’s only taken Obama 17 months to run it up to $13 trillion.

For a guy “elected to clean it up,” I’d say he’s not doing a very good job, is he?

Smith wrote: “Its time to get with the program and give President Barack Obama the same chance that you gave Bush.”

Why? So our fiscal ship can sink even faster, taking all the lifeboats down with it?

Contrary to what he wrote, it seems to me that efforts to actually balance the budget are long overdue, regardless of who’s in the White House.
