Fire near Castaic a test burn

Smoke that hovered over the Castaic area Friday morning was caused by firefighting research led by the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

County firefighters and officials from five other regional agencies set about two acres on fire at Pitchess Detention Center to test firefighter shelters used during wildfire battles, according to county fire Inspector Frederic Stowers.

“There’s a study being done ... to help firefighters see survivability rates, ratios and temperatures for the fire shelters we use,” Stowers said.

“Seeing these things under live conditions, live controlled conditions, allows us to pre-plan for conditions that are not controlled.”

The burn lasted about an hour.
