Vote carefully

We are in the “dawg days” of summer before Labor Day, after which we will be awash in corporate propaganda. This is thanks to our present Supreme Court. I offer a couple of salient points about the upcoming national election.

When we vote for our local representative to Congress, it is more than just a vote for the person who will represent the 25th Congressional District. I know, I know, “Gee, that ‘Buck’ McKeon is a nice local feller.” It will determine the leadership posts in the new Congress.

If the Republicans can harness the righteous anger at being caught in the Great Recession — and the American voter has a short political memory — they will take back control of Congress. For Speaker of the House, Republicans will elect their present leader, John Boehner of Ohio. Boehner voted for the bank bailout at the request of then-President Bush. In the present Congress, he has voted against any new regulation of these banks, which he described as “ants” being nuclear bombed by the Democrats.

As for Chairman of the Energy Committee, the senior Republican is John Barton of Texas. This is the same man who apologized to BP for having to answer tough Congressional questions about the Gulf oil spill and failure to have a plan to stop it or clean it up.

Enjoy your summer.
