First and foremost

Regarding the fatal collision on July 4 at the fireworks event in Valencia, the Santa Clarita City Council is missing a very important factor: Cars and crowds never mix. The only answer to keep the public safe is to close down Valencia Boulevard and open it to only emergency vehicles, as they can be seen and heard. I believe this is the only way to ensure the safety of the public. This is not rocket science, folks.

If you remember what happened in Westwood a few years ago, a car plowed into a crowd of people at an open market, and a lot of people were injured and killed. That was tragic.

Also in Santa Monica, an elderly man plowed into a crowd of shoppers because there were no barricades there, either. People were injured and killed as well.

When will we learn? Please, let’s not allow this to happen again; close the street down to through traffic. The children of this family now have no mom to go home to, just because our community was not doing its best to protect them. Heartfelt thoughts and prayers don’t help the kids deal with the fact that they will no longer have a mom for the rest of their lives.

We need to think these events through and provide, first and foremost, for the safety of the community.
