A local soccer club will sponsor a “pick-up” soccer match Wednesday as a way to help support the Garnica family, who lost a wife and mother July 4 during a tragic traffic collision.

The Santa Clarita Valley Magic Soccer Club-sponsored event is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Central Park on fields 5, 6 and 7.

Matilde Garnica was killed during Santa Clarita’s July 4 fireworks show. The Garnica family and other relatives were sitting on the edge of Valencia Boulevard, watching the show at Westfield Valencia Town Center, when a car crash sent a vehicle spinning into the crowd.

Matilde Garnica was killed instantly and seven other people — all members of her family — were injured.

Garnica’s 12-year-old son, Josh, plays with the Magic soccer club.

The fundraiser is for soccer players of all ages and all abilities. The public is asked to show up in soccer gear and play coach-free soccer.

The cost to participate is $10 per player, with all proceeds going to the SCVSC Garnica Family Fund.

Checks can be made out to: SCVSC Garnica Family Fund.

Editor’s note: If you have an interest in playing, or would like to help, please contact Joel Govea at joel@rightstartsoccer.com. Walk-ups are welcome, but RSVPs would be appreciated so everyone can be accommodated in a timely manner.
