Today’s Highlight in History:
On July 20, 1969, Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin became the first men to walk on the moon after landing their lunar module.

Ten years ago: A federal grand jury indicted two former Utah Olympic officials for their alleged roles in paying $1 million in cash and gifts to help bring the 2002 games to Salt Lake City. (The trial of Thomas Welch and David Johnson ended in Dec. 2003 when the judge acquitted them, citing inadequate evidence.)

Five years ago: A day after being tapped by President George W. Bush, Supreme Court nominee John Roberts paid courtesy calls on senators while a conservative group purchased TV ad time in support of his nomination and abortion rights groups staged protests.

AP Odd News
Two men burned in  methanol explosion

SEDRO-WOOLLEY, Washington (AP) — Two men who were apparently trying to take an unusual thrill ride were seriously injured in an explosion at a shop that builds and services race cars in Washington state.

Fire Chief Dean Klinger told the Skagit Valley Herald the men put about four gallons of methanol in a 55-gallon barrel in the parking lot Sunday night, sat on top and lit it for a “barrel ride.”

Klinger says, “Apparently it was supposed to slide across the parking lot like a rocket. Instead, it blew up.”

He says one end of the barrel flew 120 feet.
