Desert Streams Church will supply 1,000 backpacks to local children in need on Aug. 7 at the Newhall Community Center.

The event, Bringing Learning and Service Together, will be a back-to-school event for Santa Clarita and West San Fernando Valley foster children.

The Canyon Country church is requesting donations from various Santa Clarita businesses to fill the backpacks.

They are in need of miscellaneous school supplies, backpacks or gift cards to purchase these items.

Church members are also hoping the community can pitch in donations such as haircuts.

Desert Streams partnered with the Department of Children and Family Services to serve 550 foster children in Santa Clarita and 400 foster kids in West San Fernando Valley.

City officials, professional athletes, law enforcement and firefighters are expected to attend. The event will also feature game booths, face painting, and basketball games.
