Safety first

My sincerest condolences to the Garnica family for their tragedy at our Fourth of July fireworks. With all due respect, city of Santa Clarita, this was a preventable crash waiting to happen.

My wife works on auto row, so we go there with our family to sit on her dealership’s grass and watch the fireworks.

Word of this terrible crash was immediately shocking and very saddening.

Most of our community fireworks adult spectators are decent, law-abiding people and conscientious drivers. Distractions and other innocent causes do create collisions. However, year after year, antsy “me first” drivers, who only get worse with the crowds and heavy traffic around Westfield Valencia Town Center before, during but especially after the show, make things especially dangerous for those lining the streets and for those walking back to their cars, crossing streets and intersections after the show.

Some “me-first” cars leave early and that’s okay, unless they gun through intersections and streets to escape the coming inundation of traffic.

As thousands of spectators get back into their hundreds of cars and join the growing traffic jam, the nasty show of “me-first” really ramps up.

We wait until the crowd thins out and watch — some drivers are patient and others speed aggressively through intersections and down streets — idiots vying for any advantage while people and families with their children are crossing streets and crosswalks.

City of Santa Clarita, we need:

* Traffic enforcers controlling every intersection adjacent to the Town Center, and minding the routes leaving the area.

* All major streets and intersections adjacent to the fireworks show closed during the fireworks show. If necessary, emergency vehicles can be escorted through.

Is another family struck with preventable tragedy (saving money vs. safety) really worth it?
