Sheriff’s deputies arrested three Sacramento men this week who allegedly tried to get people in Stevenson Ranch to donate money for what they said claimed an anti-gang youth group — but turned out to be their own gasoline fund.

Rayshawn Dontay Smith, 23; Henry Lee Toy, 25; and Charles Glen Norman, 25, were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit a crime. Each was being held at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station in lieu of $2,500.

About 8:10 p.m. Monday, someone called the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station to report three suspicious men holding clipboards and asking for donations in the parking lot of Walmart in Stevenson Ranch. When sheriff’s deputies arrived, the trio ran away, said Lt. Brenda Cambra.

Minutes later, authorities arrested the men nearby. They told deputies they were asking for money because they needed gas, she said.

The men are expected to appear in Santa Clarita Superior Court today.
