The city of Santa Clarita wants you to add a few more items to your grocery list.

The city is holding a Summer Food Drive from Aug. 4 to 29 to benefit the Santa Clarita Valley Food Pantry, which has seen a big jump in demand yet is seeing a weak amount of donations.

“Due to the current economic climate and record increase in the cost of gasoline and groceries, many families who were already struggling to put food on the tables are now forced to turn to the SCV Food Pantry for help feeding their families,” Belinda Crawford, executive director of the Pantry, said in a statement.

The Food Pantry, and other food banks like the Hunger Defense Fund, usually see donations dwindle during the summer months because donors go on vacation and schools aren’t hosting food drives.

With the struggling economy and increasing local unemployment rate, demand is rising, Crawford told The Signal recently.

“The SCV Food Pantry has experienced a 53 percent increase in the number of clients during the first quarter of this year over the same period last year. The need is the highest seen in years,” Mayor Bob Kellar said in a statement. “The SCV Food Pantry served more than 4,500 unduplicated individuals since January of last year and has a goal of making sure no child in our community goes to bed hungry. We want to help with that mission.”

Most-needed items include canned meat, fish, soups, vegetables, peanut butter and pasta. Food donations can be dropped off at the following locations beginning Aug. 4:
n City Hall at 23920 Valencia Boulevard.
n Santa Clarita Aquatics Center at 20850 Centre Pointe Parkway.
n Transit Maintenance Facility at 28250 Constellation Road.

Donations may be dropped off Monday through Thursday between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. and on Fridays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. All donations will be given to the SCV Food Pantry.

The CrossRoads Tavern in Lake Hughes will also be holding a blues concert on Aug. 16 to benefit the SCV Food Pantry. Contact the tavern at (661) 724-0911 for more information.
