A golf tournament to raise funds for the young family of Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Cameron Glover, killed April 28 in an off-duty motorcycle accident, will be held Monday at Valencia Country Club.
Gene Bleeker, a Santa Clarita Valley real estate professional, is the organizer of the event.
Bleeker sent an e-mail to friends and associates asking for help in supporting the tournament. His e-mail read in part:
“I am asking my friends to join me to help this family in need by assisting me and a handful of wonderful Santa Clarita citizens to join the cause on July 12 at the Valencia Country Club. It will be a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
“Our Vision is to have 72 golfers out for a great day of golf at the exclusive Valencia Country Club. There will be no trophies, no winners, no mulligans, no tape, no best ball and no raffle. (Just) 72 golfers taking one day off to help the bride of Cameron Glover in her time of need, to hopefully give her a check on (the behalf of all attendees).”
Cost of participating in the tournament is $120 per law enforcement or fire personnel attendee and $150 for non-emergency services participants.
The Signal reported Glover, 27, a four-year member of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, was riding his motorcycle northbound on McBean Parkway near Granary Square when he collided with a car. He lost control of the motorcycle and crashed into the median, a Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station report said. Glover later died at a local hospital. He graduated from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Academy on Jan. 19, 2007, a member of Class No. 354 and had worked in the Santa Clarita Valley for about two years.
“My business partner, Bernard Kash, and I were so touched by this story we volunteered to pay $3,600 to sponsor every hole and every golf cart at the event,” said Cheryl Broughton, co-owner of VivaVitamins & Earth Wise Nutrition Centers in Valencia.
Broughton said she heard Glover had grown up in the SCV and felt it was important to support the family of someone who had dedicated his life to public service.
Glover leaves his wife Jennifer, a son born recently, a brother and his parents.
