Sheriff's deputies rushed to Canyon Country on Wednesday night to save a Labrador Retriever/Terrier mix in response to a 911 call that a man had just cut the throat of his own dog with a knife. When deputies arrived to the 15000 block of Lucille Court in Canyon Country, they found the dog struggling to survive in the backyard of the residence.

Deputies rushed the canine to the Newhall Creatures Emergency Center in an attempt to save her, but the dog could not be saved.

Brian Cunningham, 35, of Canyon Country, was arrested Wednesday night on a felony charge of cruelty to animals and was booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station. He also has an outstanding warrant and is being held in lieu $40,000 bail.

According to deputies, Cunningham believed his 13-year-old mixed canine needed to be euthanized.
