Driving as a senior

Regarding Michelle Sathe’s story “More people driving at 55 and over,” (July 5): Your article regarding senior drivers is so timely for me and my family because it has been the subject matter in our family since the beginning of May, when I had a temporary physical setback.

That little introduction to my letter is so you will clearly know how important your full article is, since it not only encompasses such insight on your part, but such vital information for those of us in our senior years.

I am actually in the “over” part of the subject matter, “55 and over” — at the age of 78 1/2. My family insisted I do not drive any more and that made it difficult since Fred, my husband, cannot drive any longer because of partial loss of his vision (aging macular degeneration).

We came to our own conclusion that it was not safe for him to drive any longer so we didn’t need the Department of Motor Vehicles representative to advise him on that. No medical doctor diagnosed me or gave me a prognosis of not being able to drive any longer, and when I felt better again I was able to drive locally.

But I don’t believe I will be tempting “disaster” by driving the freeways.

I so appreciated the information you gave in your article regarding the classes provided by AARP at the SCV Senior Center, because I believe they will certainly help me and others who are in need of same.

Also, your list of what to look for and be aware of was right on target.

Thank you, Michelle, for your continued exceptional articles. You are very much appreciated.
