The City Council responds

Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to the Santa Clarita family that lost a mother, to her children and family members who were injured and to those in attendance that evening who were so very impacted by this tragedy. Ours is a close community, and the loss of one of our own hurts deeply.

Right now, a full and complete investigation is underway by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. It is our understanding that at this time, the sheriff’s investigators are gathering photos and video that are still coming in from spectators present that evening. The investigators will be working on the report that is expected later this month.

The city has hosted fireworks on July 4 at the Westfield Valencia Town Center for the last eight years. In advance of the show, the city’s traffic department, streets department, the Los Angeles County Fire Department and the SCV Sheriff’s Station develop and implement a traffic-management plan to accommodate the many spectators, pedestrians and vehicles that are in the area. Valencia Boulevard is not closed, as it is a critical major roadway for emergency services. Parts of McBean Parkway are closed to safely accommodate the fireworks “fallout” area and that is the only major roadway closed for this event.

Please keep the Garnica family in your prayers during this incredibly difficult time.
