2Day in History

Today is Wednesday, July 7, the 188th day of 2010. There are 177 days left in the year.

Today’s Highlight in History:
On July 7, 1860, late Romantic composer-conductor Gustav Mahler was born in Kalischt, Bohemia, Austria-Hungary (in the present-day Czech Republic).

Ten years ago: President Bill Clinton postponed the first federal execution since 1963 so that convicted murderer Juan Raul Garza could ask for clemency under guidelines being updated by the government. (Garza was later executed.)

One year ago: Some 20,000 people gathered inside Staples Center in Los Angeles for a memorial service honoring the late king of pop, Michael Jackson, who was tearfully described by his 11-year-old daughter, Paris-Michael, as “the best father you could ever imagine.”

AP Odd News
Motorists strike it rich
ROME (AP) — Money makes the world go round — or in this case brings an Italian highway to a halt.

A truck carrying some $2.5 million in coins overturned in southern Italy, unloading its contents onto the highway and leading motorists to hit the brakes and dig in.

Police in Foggia, where the accident occurred Monday, said Tuesday it was impossible to establish how much money had been stolen, as many of the euro1 and euro2 coins remained in piles on the highway. But motorists acting quickly before police arrived made off with at least $12,500.

Police said the truck’s driver and one passenger had suffered minor injuries. The truck was carrying the money from the Italian mint to local banks.

Pa.’s ‘Rain Day’ mayor makes bet with Houston head
WAYNESBURG, Pa. (AP) — The mayor of a southwestern Pennsylvania city that celebrates the fact that it nearly always rains on July 29 has made a bet with the mayor of Houston, Texas.

It has rained in Waynesburg on that day 111 out of the past 135 years.

Waynesburg Mayor Blair Zimmerman is three-for-three in hat bets since taking office, including one from Miss America 2009, Katie Stam, when it rained again last year.

He’s challenging Houston Mayor Annise Parker because that city hosted a borough patrolman, Brian Tennant, and his family when Tennant needed several weeks of radiation treatments for his cancer this spring.
