City: Program designed to help residents own their homes

The city of Santa Clarita is inviting residents to add their names to an interest list for the next round of home loans through the FirstHOME Program.

FirstHOME assists eligible low- and moderate-income families in purchasing their first home by offering a low-interest, deferred-payment second mortgage to be used as a down payment on a home inside the city of Santa Clarita.

The program is funded with a grant from the California Department of Housing and Community Development.

An interest list is being developed for informational meetings to be held in September. Several dates and times will be available. Loans should be available in early 2011.

“As the housing market continues to fluctuate, the city remains committed to assisting homebuyers through successful programs like FirstHOME,” Mayor Laurene Weste said in a release.

Homes purchased through the program may be single-family or condominiums.

Demand for the program is high, so people who attend informational meetings will be entered into a lottery to apply, with applicants who have lived and worked within city limits given priority.

For details, call (661) 286-4141 or visit and select “FirstHOME.”
