The American Planning Association recently recognized the city of Santa Clarita with two awards for creating an outstanding planning project and information tools.

The city's "Community Character and Design Guidelines" won an Excellence Award for Best Practice, and the website "greensantaclarita.com" won an Innovation in Green Community Planning Merit Award.

The Santa Clarita Community Character and Design Guidelines is a document that guides the creation of new developments and gives clear direction for the renovation and redevelopment of built areas. The design guidelines have been written to make it easy for a property owner, architect, developer, City staff, members of the Planning Commission and City Council to use.

"Greensantaclarita.com" was recognized for how the site organizes a vast amount of policy, program and educational information in one convenient location. The Innovation in Green Community Planning Award is for an innovative plan, program or tool that demonstrates advancement in planner's efforts to address the serious consequences of development and everyday living on the environment.

"The Community Character and Design Guidelines and the GreenSantaClarita website were both created to allow community members, businesses and builders the ability to quickly and easily access information," Mayor Laurene Weste said. "Being recognized for these efforts is an honor for the City."
