Maybe more than ever, Hart High School experienced something different in 2009-10.

Call it “struggle” or any other closely related word, there was something different about Hart athletics this past school year.

The two defining sports at the school — football and baseball — just weren’t the same.

Football sputtered out of the gate, then got hot, then exited the postseason early.

Baseball battled just to get into the postseason.

The boys basketball team, another perennial Foothill League title contender, finished without a victory in league play.

Girls basketball, another program steeped in tradition, had a down year.

The reason, some people inside Hart High School will tell you, is that enrollment is down at the school.

Maybe more than any other athletic program, Hart has been affected by the spread of talent across the valley, which began when West Ranch and Golden Valley opened in 2004.

Yet there are still teams that thrive at Hart — namely the swim teams, softball, volleyball teams on the rise and a girls golf team that is one of the favorites for the 2010 CIF state championship.

It all makes for an intriguing 2010-11.

Sept. 4
Hart football is stunned by El Camino Real 33-28 in its first game of the year. The more stunning part is the Indians fall behind 26-0 in the third quarter. Hart wide receiver Blake Borland scores four touchdowns. The game became less of a shock as the season went on as El Camino Real finished the season 12-2.

Sept. 11

Hart recovers from its first-game loss by beating a highly touted Palmdale team, led by Florida commitment Josh Shaw. The Indians defeat the Falcons 37-34. C.J. Reyes kicks a 32-yard field goal with five seconds to play in the game for the victory. Reyes throws for 366 yards and three touchdowns as the team’s quarterback and receiver Ty MacArthur has 224 yards and three scores.
