It was a fiesta of fashion and camaraderie during Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital’s Holiday Home Tour League’s annual luncheon and membership drive held at Valencia’s Tournament Players Club.

Featuring a Cinco de Mayo buffet, a fashion show from CAbi, and colorful centerpieces by event co-chairwoman Eva Murray, approximately 95 guests were welcomed by Holiday Home Tour League president Barbara Sanguinetti.

Sanguinetti invited new guests to join the league, which raises funds for Henry Mayo’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, scheduled to open in 2011.

“The Santa Clarita Valley is a huge area and (Newhall Memorial) is our only hospital. We don’t currently have a unit dedicated for newborn critical care. Right now, the tiny, frail babies have to be airlifted to another facility,” Sanguinetti said. “Funding the NICU is our passion this year and will be until the NICU is operational.”

The Holiday Home Tour League was founded in 1982 and hosts an annual tour of Santa Clarita Valley homes extensively decorated in unique themes and festive holiday decor, as well as a black-tie gala and preview tour the evening prior, and a holiday boutique the same day as the tour.

The league’s fundraising focus is women’s services and has raised more than $700,000 to Newhall Memorial in its 29-year history.

Members pay $30 annual dues and can participate at any level they wish, whether it’s planning, participation on the board, or simply volunteering for the tour.

“Our goal is to recruit members who are willing to give their time to help out. We’ll begin planning soon, as our main event is held the first week in December,” Murray said.

As guests dined on tortilla soup, tacos, quesadillas and cupcakes, models from Newhall Memorial’s  various fundraising groups, including the Home Tour League, Guild and Auxiliary, wandered among the guest tables for a tearoom-style fashion show.

Shelley Hann, Anita Sheidenberger, Oriana Garlick, Marina Hayes, Tamara Oliner-Levine, Estelle Hoffman, Bobbie Stephens and Ada Blumstein wore big smiles along with their CAbi clothing, which ranged from business to leisure wear, eliciting applause from the audience.

Following the show, Diana Vose, Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Health Foundation president, highlighted several of the hospital’s recent upgrades and new services, such as the new expanded intensive care unit, and encouraged guests to become a part of the league.

“I think you’ll have a great time planning a wonderful event, and at the same time, helping the hospital in an important way,” Vose said.

That’s certainly the case for Linda Seaton, of Newhall, a league member for 22 years who won the day’s raffle prize, a bright pink scarf from CAbi.

“I originally joined because I moved here and didn’t have any friends. It’s been a great way to meet people who care about the community,” Seaton said. “I love the decorating and creativity and I love to see the beautiful homes. The Home Tour is a tradition in the Santa Clarita Valley and it’s just a lovely experience.”
