The Signal, the Santa Clarita Valley's first and best source for local news, unveiled its new Web site at www.the-signal.com this morning.

Better-looking, more user-friendly and far more interactive than the previous site, The Signal's new online footprint combines the best of the daily print newspaper plus a host of new Web-only features designed to maintain and build upon its status as the SCV's most-visited news site.

Along with complete coverage of Santa Clarita Valley news, sports, opinion and commentary, schools, community events, entertainment, obituaries and more, the new site provides a community calendar, staff and visitor blogs, video footage, photo albums and slide shows, photo purchase, an "Ask the Expert" feature, classified ads and much more.

"Since 1919, The Signal has been committed to being the prime news and information source for the Santa Clarita Valley," said Jay Harn, Signal publisher. "Now, with our redesigned Web site, we're not only able to bring our readers the most comprehensive local news and information, but also to provide site visitors the opportunity to directly join the conversation by using the new interactive features."

For local advertisers, or advertisers outside the area who wish to target potential customers in the SCV, the new site offers classified and display ads as well as numerous opportunities for advertising on the site's front page and throughout its pages. Also available are sponsorships of key sections such as news, sports, Lifestyle, Escape (entertainment) and more.

The Signal's Web site also provides a way for local residents on the road as well as out-of-town relatives to stay in touch with what's happening in the SCV, any time and from anywhere there's an Internet connection.

The new site was designed and developed by Morris Technology, which worked closely with Joseph Choo, The Signal's Webmaster and interactive/information technology manager, and Stephen K. Peeples, newly appointed Online Editor, to tailor the site for the SCV communities the newspaper serves.

"The Web is such an integral part of our lives today," Choo said. "It's not enough just to have a good-looking site; there are many great-looking sites out there. I'm pleased we can provide a site that not only disseminates information but also allows the Santa Clarita Valley community to be heard. We invite our readers and regular site visitors to check out all the improvements -- which incorporate many of our visitors' suggestions."

Though much development was completed prior to launch, Choo said the new site is a work in progress. "In the months ahead we'll be fine-tuning current features and adding new elements to make it even more user-friendly and interactive. As always, we welcome useful feedback."
