Santa Clarita city workers will begin planting approximately 300 trees throughout the city today that were burned or damaged in the firestorm that swept through the eastern side of the valley last October.

Sixty-two damaged palm trees will be removed along Camp Plenty Road in Canyon Country and will be replaced with 77 Chinese Flame trees.

"These new trees will have increased environmental benefits providing more shade and increased air filtering capabilities, and they have the ability to catch more rain water than the trees being removed," Robert Sartain, the city's urban forestry supervisor, said in a statement.

The tree replacement is expected to take about three months.
