The 81 Series will return to the Repertory East Playhouse from Friday, July 9 to Saturday, July 24 with "The Last Days of Judas Iscariot," written by Stephen Adly Guirgis.

The play is set in a time-bending, darkly comic world between heaven and hell, and reexamines the plight and fate of the New Testament's most infamous and unexplained sinner, the REP said.

Judas litigates with his lawyers in Purgatory for entry into heaven. The story flashes backs to an imagined childhood, and lawyers call such witnesses as Mother Teresa, Caiaphas, Sigmund Freud and Satan for testimonies.

"We are very excited that this piece is part of our 81 Series," Artistic Director Ovington Michael Owston said. "This year the 81 Series is funded by a grant from the California Arts Council and the National Endowment for The Arts."

"The Last Days of Jucas Iscariot" will run Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Opening Night Gala is at 7 p.m. and curtain at 8 p.m. and sponsored by Engelmann Cellars.

Tickets cost $18 for Adults and $16 for students and seniors. Group rates are available. The REP recomends advance reservations.

REP patrons can mix, mingle and enjoy a cocktail one hour before the show in the Hydeaway Lounge, the REP's full-service cocktail lounge.

The REP will host show discussions immediately following each Sunday Matinee. Join the cast and crew for an intimate discussion about the process of creating live theatre.

The Repertory East Playhouse is located at 24266 Main Street, Newhall 91321.
