The Santa Clarita Valley Economic Development Corp. has hired out of Arizona an executive director who led an effort to locate Chrysler Corp.'s vehicle proving ground in the Grand Canyon State.

Jonas Peterson, economic development director for Mohave County, Arizona, was selected after the SCVEDC -- formed in late 2009 -- conducted a five-month search for a director.

Peterson starts his new job on Monday, said Bill Kennedy, chair of the EDC board.

Kennedy said Peterson's track record was one of the deciding factors in his hiring.

"He thinks like a doer and acts like a thinker," Kennedy said Wednesday.

In addition to leading the effort to persuade Chrysler to locate its vehicle proving ground in Mohave County, Peterson also created a regional business retention and expansion program, according to a Wednesday news release.

A North Dakota native, he was named the 2010 Arizona Economic Developer of the Year by the Arizona Association for Economic Development.

Peterson has worked for Mohave County since 2005.

"I could not be more excited to join the Santa Clarita Valley EDC," Peterson said in the release. "The opportunity to work on economic development issues with some of the valley's best and brightest leaders is truly an honor. We have a tremendous opportunity ahead of us and I believe we are up to the challenge."

The nonprofit, public/private corporation was formed to both attract new business to the valley and act as a resource for the existing business community.

Peterson will settle into an office at the EDC's home near the corner of Magic Mountain Parkway and Tourney Road.

Kennedy said the EDC has several other positions to fill, including "a right-hand person" for Peterson, an administrative assistant and potentially one or two internships.
