College of the Canyons employees Wendy Trujillo and Celina Baguiao present Mike Hoder his new Dell laptop, top prize in the college's "40 Ways to Change Your Life" contest.

Mike Hoder of Valencia won a new laptop in College of the Canyons' "40 Ways to Change Your Life" contest, which began last fall and ended in May.

Hoder, who won with the Week 12 Twitter word of the week, "Vegetable," is a COC computer science major who is planning on transferring to California State University, Northridge in 2011.

The new Dell laptop will replace the bedraggled one that accompanied Mike to the deserts of Iraq.

Hoder, who served in the U.S. Army for six years and achieved the rank of sergeant, spent 2005-06 with the 54th Engineers Battalion searching for roadside bombs -- IEDs -- along the roads outside of Ramadi, Iraq.

"We found more than 1,000 bombs," Hoder said. "Sometimes they found us."
