Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station deputies made 12 drug-related arrests last weekend as authorities send a clear message to would-be drug users and dealers that illegal drugs will not be tolerated in this community.

Patrol deputies made nine felony and three misdemeanor drug-related arrests from Friday to Sunday, bringing the total number of reported drug-related incidents handled by the station's deputies to just over 750 for 2010.

In one arrest, a deputy was patroling Newhall Park just after 10:30 a.m. Sunday when he observed a man acting suspiciously near one of the vending machines.

The deputy approached the man on foot and saw that he was hiding something near one of the windows of a closed concession stand. The deputy also noticed the man was in possession of alcohol.

After detaining the man, the deputy located a bag of methamphetamine hidden near the window. He also found drug paraphernalia.

The suspect, Alberto Cruz, 27, of Newhall, was booked at the station on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance and a misdemeanor charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Cruz's arrest was the 750th such drug-related incident reported this year. Cruz is being held in lieu of $10,000 bail pending future court proceedings.

"These proactive patrol efforts are an important element of the aggressive new drug prevention strategies we are implementing in the Santa Clarita Valley," SCV Sheriff's Station Captain Paul Becker said. "We intend to do everything we can to reduce the prevalence of drugs in our community."
