Robert Freise sits atop a goalpost recently at Canyon High School. On Saturday, Freise played as a defender on a U-18 LAFC soccer club team that finished second at the Home Depot Center in Carson.

Canyon High School soccer player Robert Freise and the Under-17/18 LAFC soccer team were four minutes away from winning the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Finals late Friday night on Glenn Myernick Field at the U.S. Soccer National Training Center.

LAFC was ahead 2-1, down one man after Patrick Chin was shown his second yellow card and was red-carded out of the match.

One minute later, the Baltimore Bays tied the game on a penalty kick, then scored twice more in overtime to win the championship, 4-2.

Playing as a fullback in overtime due to Chin's cards, Freise cleared a couple of balls that rolled just outside the 18-yard penalty box.

"I think we played well," Freise said. "It united us. We were down two men. The first time was 30 minutes into the game, the second was a red card in overtime."

LAFC's Kevin Mejia scored the first goal of the game 20 minutes into the game.

Ten minutes later, Baltimore's Chris Agorsor came off the bench after nursing a knee injury, and tied the game at 1.

In the 67th minute, Mejia struck again, with a header off a back-post crossing pass from Carlos Alvarez for a 2-1 lead.

After an LAFC defender took down Bays Development Academy Player of the Year Agorsor in the 89th minute, Andrew Bulls scored on a penalty kick in stoppage time to force overtime.

"They got an unfortunate penalty kick," Freise said.

That's where Bulls scored the go-ahead goal in the 97th minute.

From 35 yards away and no defenders closing in, Bulls drilled a right-footer that went just beneath the top right corner of the goal.

The LAFC Under-17/18 team finished the season 25-3-3.
