Crime: Sheriff’s officials are waiting to arrest man

Sheriff’s officials plan to arrest an alleged carjacker upon his release from the hospital, Lt. Mark Hershey said Saturday.

“We would have arrested the guy, but he checked himself into the hospital,” said Hershey of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

According to sheriff’s reports, the man approached a couple, pointed a gun and demanded money around 10:30 p.m. Friday at Heritage Park in Valencia.

Deputies later discovered the weapon to be an airsoft gun when they found it inside the vehicle.

The couple did not have any money, so the man took their car keys and drove away with their vehicle, Hershey said. Several hours later, the man checked himself into a hospital, where he apparently revealed he had stolen a vehicle, Hershey said.

“When he’s released, they’re supposed to call us and we’re supposed to arrest him,” Hershey said.

Sheriff’s officials returned the stolen vehicle to its owners.

The suspect will be arrested on suspicion of carjacking, Hershey said.
