A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department patrol car and a Mercedes Benz collided in Stevenson Ranch early Tuesday, sending a local deputy and a Garden Grove teen to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital with minor to moderate injuries.

About 4:43 a.m., Deputy Blake Carpenter, 24, was driving a patrol car westbound on Pico Canyon Road to respond to a nonemergency call, Sheriff’s Department and California Highway Patrol officials said.

On Pico Canyon Road at Stevenson Ranch Parkway, an eastbound 2005 Mercedes Benz E55 driven by Jessie Frutos, 17, of Garden Grove, turned left directly in front of Carpenter, resulting in a head-on collision, according to a report by the CHP, which is investigating the crash.

Both Frutos and Carpenter were taken to a local hospital.

Carpenter will be kept at the hospital overnight for observation, said Sgt. Darren Harris of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
