A Los Angeles County sheriff's patrol car and a Mercedes collided in Stevenson Ranch early today, sending a local deputy and a Garden Grove teen to a local hospital with minor to moderate injuries.

About 4:43 a.m., Deputy Blake Carpenter, 24, was driving a patrol car westbound on Pico Canyon Road to respond to a non-emergency call, sheriff's and California Highway Patrol officials said.

On Pico Canyon Road at Stevenson Ranch Parkway, an eastbound 2005 Mercedes E-55 driven by Jessie Frutos, 17, of Garden Grove turned left directly in front of Carpenter, resulting in a head-on collision, according to a report by the CHP, which is investigating the crash.

Both Frutos and Carpenter were taken to a local hospital.

Carpenter will be kept at the hospital overnight for observation, said Sgt. Darren Harris of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station.
