Ceanothus, sometimes known as California lilac, is a cool plant for hot places.

The long, hot days of summer provide the perfect time to think about some cool plants that love hot places.

Descanso Gardens offers a three-session class on Saturdays, Aug. 2 through Aug. 16, from 10 a.m. to noon that covers this topic.

Instructor Steve Gerischer will provide a list of the best heat-loving and drought-tolerant plants, trees, shrubs and ground covers and discuss how to plant and care for them, where to find them, and other related items.

Gerischer has lectured at Smith and Hawken and Hortus, the Arboretum and Descanso. He has been designing ecologically sound gardens for more than 20 years.

Fees: $45 ($35 Descanso members). Reservations recommended. Walk-in space is not always available.

To register, call (818) 949-7980.
