A woman is conscious but suffering serious head injuries today after a man allegedly hit her in the face, causing her to fall and strike her head on the pavement.

A 25-year-old Tujunga man is now charged with assault causing serious bodily injury.

The assault happened at about 2.30 a.m. in a parking lot near Soledad Canyon Road and Bouquet Canyon Road, said Lt. Mark Hershey of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station.

"There was a fight in the parking lot between a male and a female," he said. "The male punched her in the face and she fell backwards. She was knocked out.

"She has serious head injuries," he added.

The woman, identified only as in her 20s, regained consciousness and is being treated at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital.

Sheriff's deputies were able to identify and locate a suspect based on information from witnesses including a partial license plate of the attacker's vehicle and a first name.

At about 7 a.m., local detectives drove to Tujunga and arrested a man as he reportedly left his house and got into his truck.
Charged is Dustin Newton, 25, of Tujunga.
