Members of Zonta Club of the Santa Clarita Valley filled the banquet room of LeChene French Cuisine recently to honor three of their own - outgoing President Cindy Kittle, incoming President Karla Edwards and newly named Zontian of the Year Peggy Edwards.

Edwards was selected by a committee of former Zontian of the Year winners, based on nominations received by club members. This year's winner was an overwhelming choice with six nominations, more than any other candidate.

She was saluted for her strong advocacy for women's and children's rights, her tireless energy, her willingness to share her talents and expertise, and her ability to bring out the best in others by motivating them to work at a higher level. During the past year, she stepped forward to truly make a difference as co-chairwoman of the Tribute dinner, Zonta's major fundraiser, and the new LifeForward workshops, a series of self-help workshops designed to empower women.

Edwards has been a member of the SCV Zonta Club for 14 years and has served on the district, as well as the local club board level. She is a former Area 3 Director, serving as a liaison between Zonta Clubs in the greater Los Angeles area. On a personal level, she loves to travel (her favorite country is Italy) and cook.

Zonta's 2010 installation dinner had an international theme in honor of incoming President Karla Edwards' love of world travel. The parade of past presidents had each participant wearing a sash representing a country and identified by pageant titles such as Miss Understanding or Miss Conception.

Zontian and City Councilwoman Marsha McLean installed the new board and officers for both the club and Zonta Foundation, chuckling at zany gifts given to each by Installation Committee Chairwoman Chris Miller.

The club secretary, for instance, received two Etch-a-Sketch pads - a small one for board meetings and a large one for business meetings.

President Karla Edwards received the president's pin and club gavel from outgoing President Cindy Kittle, and a toy duck to remind her to "keep paddling" during her term of office. Both incoming and outgoing presidents thanked club members for their support during their terms.

Other officers installed included JoAnn Rodriguez, president-elect; Alicia Estrada, first vice president-programs; Karen Maleck-Whitely, second vice president-membership; Bernie Gilbert, treasurer; and Chris Miller, secretary. Edna Dimataga-Fernandez and Adele Macpherson were installed as new members of the club board, joining continuing members Diane Goddard, JoAnne Lindsey and Barbara Stearns-Cochran.

McLean also installed new Nominating Committee members Sharon Langenbeck, Vicki Oren and Cindy Kittle.
Foundation officers and board members were also installed during the festive evening. Adele Macpherson returns as president of the Zonta Foundation, with Sharon Langenbeck as treasurer and Alicia Estrada as secretary.

Incoming board member Lois Bauccio took the pledge of incoming office, along with continuing Foundation board members Darleen Lyons, Chris Miller and Cathie Kincheloe.

Karla Edwards and JoAnn Rodriguez will serve as Foundation board members in their capacity as club president and president-elect.

Each year, installation is organized by a committee of past club presidents, with the previous year's president as chairwoman. This year's invitation carried a theme of Zonta Zoo, a red herring aimed at Edward's request that the theme represent her love of animals.

The newly installed officers and directors officially took over their Zonta duties as of June 1.
