Sheriff’s deputies were able to arrest a suspected thief in Canyon Country after a resident tipped them off, according to a Friday report.

Ricardo Cortes, 25, was reportedly spotted breaking into vehicles in the 18000 block of American Beauty Drive Wednesday night.

The observant resident called the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station and deputies responded to the neighborhood to set up a containment area.

Within moments, Cortes was reportedly spotted about one block away and arrested by deputies.

According to the report, deputies said Cortes was riding a Razor scooter in the darkness of night, apparently trying door handles on vehicles on several streets until he found unlocked ones then taking whatever he could find of value in the cars.

Among the items recovered by sheriff’s deputies were sunglasses, jewelry and a DVD player.

Cortes, who lives in Canyon Country, was booked at the sheriff’s station on felony charges of reasonable cause of receiving stolen property and a misdemeanor charge of petty theft from unlocked vehicles.
He is being held in lieu of $20,000 bail.

The investigation is ongoing.
