Are you appalled?

Are you appalled by the front-page story ("City OK's $117K ‘Old West' re-do for Newhall Library," May 13) regarding the cost of revised architectural drawings for our new library? So was I.

Not only is there only a miniscule difference between the original and the second set, it is an obscene waste of our money. One source said that the original design was fine, it just needed to be "tweaked." So $117,000 later, it still resembles a Swiss chalet. Who made the decision for this added expenditure, and why?

Traditionally, several architects are given very clear guidelines for a proposed project. The best of the entries are picked. Any revisions are made by the architect without further cost to the client.

Our new and bigger Santa Clarita courthouse will be following this procedure. So how and why did a "Swiss chalet" drawing get picked in the first place? Why did a "tweak" merit an additional $117,000? Would it not be better spent on books, computers and the services of needed personnel?

"Spectacular?" "Inspirational?" Not at all. Will I be proud upon the (delayed) completion of this project? I will be saddened by the choice of style over substance. And in my opinion, it is a ridiculous style at that.

It is my hope and my purpose in writing this letter, that someone in a decision-making capacity will take the high road in correcting this gross misuse of funds.
