The Santa Clarita City Council last week created a scholarship to honor parks commissioner Ed Redd, who died earlier this year.

The council named part of the Newhall Community Center after Redd and also placed his photograph in the parks department office.

The honors come about two months after the sudden death of Redd, a youth advocate who served on the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Commission for nearly eight years.

He had also worked with at-risk young people and their families and was "instrumental in starting several youth initiatives in Santa Clarita," city officials said in a written statement.

"His record of serving our community was so commendable," said City Councilwoman Marsha McLean.

McLean, who had appointed Redd to the parks commission, spearheaded the initial effort to honor him.

City officials will hold a public ceremony for the naming of the "Ed Redd Teen Room" at the Newhall Community Center, McLean said. The date of the ceremony was not set as of Friday.

The public will be welcome to attend, city officials said.

"He was such a wonderful presence," McLean said. "I miss him very much."
