Members of the Assiteens group assemble I Care About Me kits to distribute to students.

The Santa Clarita Valley teen group, Assisteens, was awarded a grant to implement a Global Youth Service Day project addressing hygiene for local children in need.

The Assisteens recently received a $500 Get Ur Good On grant award from Youth Service America. One of 100 grantees from around the world, Assisteens joined the millions of children and youth in more than 100 countries participating in Global Youth Service day, April 23-25, the largest service event in the world.

Assisteens, an auxiliary group of Assistance League of Santa Clarita, is a group of seventh through 12th graders in the Santa Clarita Valley. The group's I Care About Me program has provided health kits to thousands of children in need for the past 17 years. This kit includes a toothbrush, toothpaste, tissues, shampoo and hand sanitizer. The kit is given to school children at the beginning of every school year to help them learn the importance of good hygiene.

"This year, we are so excited to receive a $500 grant from Get Ur Good On and Youth Service America," Assisteens chairwoman Hannah Stanley said. "Our program is usually done in September to coincide with the beginning of school. However, since we received this grant, we are getting together to assemble our kits early."

The 37 teen members have raised funds throughout the year to purchase the contents of the kits. The $500 grant will buy 1,250 tubes of toothpaste for the 1,700 kits distributed each year.

Assisteens is currently seeking members between 7th and 11th grades interested in providing hands on community service. If you are interested in joining, e-mail Assisteens Chairwoman Jackie Hamby at alsc@email.com.
